Welcome to the official website of aXolot

aXolot is an international ensemble, in origin as well as outlook, as evolutionary and adaptable as our ancient-futuristic namesake. Our core is the recorder trio, specializing in generating and realising contemporary music in collaboration with young composers. With visual art as an integral part of our collective, we produce performances as a full interdisciplinary whole, including live electronics and film. Though looking to the future, we also have deeps roots in the far past; performing medieval and renaissance consort music in a classical early music format.

aXolot part of music-theater production TIME

We are super Xcited and very happy that aXolot will be part of this years final production of Europe’s first Master degree in modern music theater T.I.M.E..

We will be working intensively for two month on this music-theater production. The base will form the myth of Midas and Luciano Berio will give the compositional inspiration. Our premiere will be in May and the theater tour through holland will take place in May/June…

WHAT IS MUSIC THEATRE?

According to the philosophy of T.I.M.E. music theatre is the art where music and theatre enhance each other, without illustrating the other (as in musicals) or dominating (as in opera). Music theatre is a form of theatre in which movement, image, light, text, music and projection are equal and each have its own meaning. Compositional principals from the music are integrated in theatrical elements. Text is approached musically; it’s about the rythm, pace, metric and sound of words. Sounds are not just reproduced, they can be enlarged, slowed down, sped up, repeated or stopped.  This way a layered musical theatrically performance with multiple dramatic lines forms. The compositional thinking largely determines the theatrical quality of the work. Besides this there is ample attention for the societal context that the current music theatre is linked to.

TREE – study VII/VIII

Aliona Yurtsevich (BYR/US)

“TREE – study VII” for recorder trio, 6 channel electronics and tape 2010

“TREE – study VIII” for recorder trio, voices and live electronics 2010

These two compositions are part of the TREE – study research. A research taking on the challenge of developing new ways of visual composition, interpretation and notation. The basis for these works forms the image of a tree and the intention to try and reach closer to the core of existence, life and nature by doing so finding new sound worlds and ways of expression.

A wonderful and challenging research.

New composition “Offshore”

A new composition for trio aXolot is coming this June: “Offshore” by German composer Thorsten Töpp!

It will be a composition for very low recorder ensemble with an enormous and prominent reverb. The premiere will be in the huge concert hall of the “Krafterkzentrale”  on 2nd of July at the “Traumzeitfestival” in Duisburg/ Germany.

We are also very excited about our latest collaboration with dutch visual and video artist Marjolijn Zwakman! She is developing very beautiful and challenging visual art based on the compositions and music we are playing. Its the beginning of an exciting work process researching the points of contacts of visual art and music. The first results of this challenging collaboration will be premiered on the “Traumzeitfestival”!
